Haines, Alaska

Mingle with the locals in this quaint coastal town in the Alaska Panhandle. With a modest population of only 2500, Haines is not a heavily visited area which allows natural scenery and beauty to shine. Stand anywhere in Haines to view the breathtaking vistas and glorious backdrop that envelopes the surrounding landscape.

The city of Haines is small; a total area of 21.5 square miles incorporating both land and water, which means that outdoor recreation really is the biggest, and most popular highlight in Haines. The Lynn Canal inlet that runs into southeast Alaska's mainland is the longest and deepest fjord in North America, as well as one of the longest and deepest in the world.

If you enjoy the outdoors, Haines is the place for you as it has everything from hiking and rafting to fishing and golfing. Of course, Haines caters for everyone so there are restaurants that serve fresh, local foods (yes, fish is on the menu) and shopping where you can buy everything from exquisite silkscreen prints and locally-made jewelry, to freshly smoked Alaskan halibut and salmon. However, if you just want to unwind with a refreshing drink, there is a bar at the nearby hotel that features local beer and spirits, so you can put your feet up and relax after a long day of exploring.

Haines has something for everyone; whether you prefer scenic sightseeing, excursions focusing on viewing wildlife in its natural habitat, or historical and cultural enrichment tours, there is something to cater to everyone's desires.
